How is the catastrophe of Sophy portrayed/ tragedy?
The tragedy of Sophy is heart wrenching. Her tragedy is compounded by the fact that she was a small time country girl. Although her marriage to the vicar enthralled her, the vicar himself regarded it as social suicide. The imp halting doom was already hinted at. later on Sophy produced a son who she adored. Her son was taught good manners and culture, better at prestigious institutions. Even earlier in the written report the reader is taken aback at the sons irritation at his mothers grammar.
