The lords had lots of control over their people. They could adjust marriages, and organise the care of any children that were orphans. Young orphan boys were sometimes looked after by the Lord or they were sent to some other family.
Peasants could not leave the manor with step forward permission from the Lord. Any peasants who move to run away from the manor would be captured and punished but they would not be killed because the Lord couldnt get justify of his workers as they were hard to replace. Also, the Lord would get less funds because he would no longer receive their taxes.
Peasants did have a few rights. They could pass down the land that they own to their sons for them to work on. The richer peasants could also pay some money to the Lord of the manor allowing them to leave his land or they could marry someone that is not from the Lords town. It was very unlikely that a peasant could become an important person.
The only way to become this was done the church with its education that could help you go higher up the feudal system.
