In terms of military development, the Civil War is probably the virtually important evolution of late combat. Rifles, railcar guns, repeating guns, ironclads, and trench warfare were all developed in this conflict. For something that only lasted four years the advances in technology and maneuver were amazing. The gaps in resources and manufacturing capabilities forced the two sides to find newer and better slipway to kill each other. The tactics and technologies developed in this rate of flow changed the way we fought, and they are still use in modern combat.
The Civil War was a chaotic period in American history. A united America was an incredibly ruffianly opponent; however, a divided America was left scrambling for everything. The industrial works were in the North, the weapons manufacturers in the South. The South had to make do with the weapons they already had due to most of the resources being in the north. In fact most of the Southern weapons were imported, through the blockade, from France and England.
One of the most major developments was the use of rifling. Before this period rifling was used quite rarely, with only an elite group of marksman utilise them.



This was because of the long process of threading the bullet, or mini-ball as it was called, through the the grooves by hand. During the Civil War, a new process was invented. A holloa bullet was muzzle-loaded into the barrel just like a musket ball. As the bullet fired it expanded, catching the grooves that lined the barrel.
The rifle was able to accurately fire at a much great distance. Previously a musket could at most reach cytosine yards. The rifle could accurately fire up to a one-half mile. The musket charge had been a tactic since the mid 17th century, it winding a huddled up mass of musketeers would quickly visitation at enemy lines. The viability of this tactic resided in the inaccuracy of muskets combined with its deadening reload speed.
